Flowers for Stephan

Flowers for Stephan

Thanks to all who brought flowers to Steve’s memorial at the town clock, and to Ario for the idea. The living flowers and bulbs have been planted in Kilkare Woods where Steve was learning the magic of plants that return each year.

“You were right! You were right! They came back! Just like you said. Unbelievable! This is great. I need some more of those things,” was how Steve expressed his wonder at the phenomonem of bulbs, flowers that reseed, and perenniels that spring forth at the nudge of winter rains.

The yellow daffodils are planted alongside the road with the giant blue hyacinths where the deer can freely enjoy them, but won’t eat them, because deer don’t eat daffodils. The red tulips are behind the sycamore tree near a planting of ranunculus in all colors. The angel statue that Steve loved for so many years, moving it from place to place and hanging lights around it, is now flanked by white freesias and a small red rose bush. The primroses add color nearby and will return to flower next winter.

Redwood
Down in the Kilkare Woods Association ballpark alongside Sinbad Creek, friends planted a redwood tree, Sequoia sempervirens. Sempervirens is from the Latin meaning always green, always living.
