On the Sunol Christmas Train ride we ran into Steve, sitting slumped in his seat. Upon seeing him we headed his way. I had my granddaughter Taylor with me for her first ever train ride and visit with Santa. Steve spotted us and his eyes lit up saying, “I just asked Santa for a baby and here she is”! He grabbed her and got someone’s red scarf and wrapped it around her neck and proceeded to walk from car to car showing everyone while proclaiming “look at my baby, isn’t she gorgeous?” He even had some people believing him. He held her and watched as she met Santa and then let her indulge on a candy cane. After the ride we continued our visit at home. Steve was on the floor with her banging tins and pots and pans while engaging in their own private conversation.

Steve’s contagious excitement and unconditional acceptance will always remain in my memory.
